The Inner English Teacher Strikes...

... just when I least want her to! I hope none of you excellent bloggers takes this as criticism because I love the blogs I read for their content, not their spelling, but there is one thing I can't BEAR any longer! I actually ended up checking the spelling myself the other day to see if it was me. I'm not the best of spellers you know. But it wasn't me (for once). It's not every one of us, by any means. Feel smug if you're not a part of it. But I think it's spreading, so here's an itty-bitty post to try and stem the tide...
jj
This is a bear. B-E-A-R. This woman has a heavy load to bear. B-E-A-R.
This is Lady Godiva. She is bare. B-A-R-E.
This family friendly video has a nice little pun on the correct spelling of 'bear with me'. It doesn't actually mean the big hairy bear, of course, but it means 'to put up with me', as in the earlier pic, of 'bearing a heavy load'. 'Put up with me.' 'Bear with me.' B-E-A-R.THESE people are part of an art installation which could fairly be spelt the other way: 'Bare with me'. B-A-R-E. I'm not showing the image on my blog, as I know American friends who have a different approach to nudity to us Europeans! But if you want to see it, you can click on the link...j
My Inner English Teacher gets an image like THAT when I read 'bare with me'. Please save me from further trauma.

OOoops! Sorry if I'm guilty. Sadly my school days are in the distant past and I truly do forget how to spell sometimes...x

The one I often notice is peek/peak. "Let's take a peak at...", the blogs say, and I imagine someone who feels a bit peaky staying home from work to read interior design websites.

I find that very interesting!
I think it is vital to discuss language, how we must accept change, all languages have changed over centuries and will change - but how we also must take care of our rich beautiful language. And maintain what is left of it!
I feel this is part of a trend. My mothertongues, sweadish and finnish, are both weakened by this trend. There is no longer just the spoken and written language difference, but due to sms and chats (where people seem to communicate with a language using the phonetic alphabet as it´s frame - I might be wrong here!) we now also have a new language. It´s spoken form sounds very lazy and in my ears, very annoying!

For me it's apostrophes! I hate to see them used where none is required. It will be a shame if we forget how to spell and how to use our wonderful language and can only write txt spk won't it?!!

As for Americans and nudity (after having spent a great deal of time in Europe) I can totally see why we come across as prudes to Europeans! I do think it quite funny... it's just the way things are over here (I personally take no offense). HOWEVER, I majored in Art in college, so I've seen enough nude art to make up for it now! lol

Me again. I think to blag well you actually don't need to ask for things (that's so typical of me, I get it wrong all the time), but post frequently about big brands (like Tesco and large department stores). It would appear that for some these little (or large) gifts are completely unexpected?!I am being cynical again... The comments from other bloggers who have been asked to promote brands but refused have been quite enlightening.xx

I'm with Claire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I love these and your right there are alot of words with double meanings and if you don't know or have been out of school to long and need a refresher course like me, stare-stair see-sea blue-blew through-threw you could go on for days.

I sure hope your Mom adjusts well oh I don't want to even think about that day...It's so hard isn't it. My Dad is 74 and were thinking he might have a start of something. I just hate to see these important people in your life getting older. I pray my Mom gets to come home today, fingers crossed!

I'm not the best of spellers but I like good grammar & punctuation ( even on a blog )
I like play on words though. My fitness class I've joined is called " Y weight to shape " which is great .
Why do we not get spell check on blog comments ?

My daughter still has a piece of paper with my dad's examples of to's he'd written for her... two, too, to.... Sure makes it hard for some kids to learn all of the variations.

Warm blessings,

I use the spell checker on blogger but sometimes I'm not convinced its right!

BTW I've not heard from my Magazine Swap partner despite emailing her at the beginning of the week. Do you know if all is ok with her?

I'm with you Floss. I hate to see things spelt the wrong way. The ones with apostrophies are the worst! Drives me crazy. I don't think I use the bear/bare word too often.

Totally agree with you Floss .... I heard on the radio this morning that those dreadful abbreviations like FYI, IMHO, IYKWIM are slowly becoming part of the English language because of text messaging .... aghhhhh !

hehehe! This too drives me a little insane. As does "sneak peak" (??) is there a sneaky mountain top ahead??! My mum is a teacher and a librarian, so it's probably my upbringing that has done this to me!

I work in a call centre where numerous people type notes in the jobs - the spelling, grammar and content is sometimes very poor! Luckily you can't correct other peoples work or I would be there all day 'tidying' up their notes! It doesn't bother me in blogland though as it's not work related so therefore for me standards aren't so relevant. xxx

I do try really hard, but I am dyslexic. Sorry If my grammar and spelling is terrible. I don't know what I would do without spell check!

Well, I used to get very good marks in my spelling tests at school, but then my Mum was a teacher! These days though, I hope I am still ok, but who knows! I do like to see good spelling though. Susie xx

Hi Floss
I'm with you! I can't bear(!!) bad spelling or grammar but I thought it was just me turning into a grumpy old woman!!

Goodness me, so many comments! I am noticing many people writing, 'without further adieu,' instead of 'ado' which drives me mad. I did publish a post a couple of weeks ago, where I'd put 'waste' instead of 'waist,' though and didn't even realise until a week later. Aaaahhh! What was I thinking? Indeed, was I concentrating at all? It happens to the best of us, then!
