Today is Special - use the pretty salad servers!

This is the first time I've felt up to downloading any of my photos for ages - today is special! I'm still signed off work as my hormones settle themselves back down following this thyroid virus, but I have a little more energy than a few days ago. To celebrate, I'm linking to Denise's Today is Special idea. This very special little girl and her doll are on the handle of some salad servers my mum passed on to me last year. They are a little fragile and have broken and been mended several times - perhaps it would be wiser to leave them in the drawer?
Well, I think not, really. The full quote, which Denise found on Lissy Lou's blog, is: "Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special." And indeed it is, so the little girls will join us every day we eat salad. I think it would be a shame for them to linger in a drawer, and they do a very good and decorative job for us, even this rather unfortunate little sister.
If we don't use the lovely things we own every day, when will we use them?
And isn't a bought salad when you're ill a bit more special for being served by such pretty little sisters?

I do so agree that we should use and enjoy things and not keep them hidden away or for best.

Glad you are feeling a bit better hope you will soon be 100%. Check out my blog where you will see I have an award for you!

Dear Floss
Thank you for taking part in "Today is Special" :-)
I do love your salad servers - and how can you appreciate them in the drawer?
Aren't boiled eggs such good comfort food? Your 'ready made' salad looks delicious. My Hubby is not a salad eater, so if I want salad I have to eat all the lettuce etc myself! I tend to buy bags of watercress or rocket as I can easily use them up.
I'm glad to hear you are feeling brighter - take it easy still and I hope you'll be fully fit before getting back to teaching!
Happy weekend,
Denise x

I think you are so right, what are we keeping the best things for. Lets make everyday speical. I use my good candles. Last year made me feel this way.

You are so right, we were brought up to 'save it for best' but why ?, when is best ? The clothes in particular that were saved for 'best' were undoubtably grown out of by the time that 'best' time came !

I love the salad servers, and in my experience, with children who put the dishes away rather carelessly at times, they would be more likely to be broken IN the drawer than out of it!
So glad you are getting the virus under control.

They are so beautiful and obviously precious and all the better for being used and cherished by the people that love them..

I just don't see the point of using lovely things for special occasions only. It's the same with pretty girls dresses. What's the point, they grown so jolly fast anyway.

Sometimes it's nice to use the good cutlery for an everyday meal. In fact I really don't like our old cutlery so much I'd rather give it away. You should enjoy every day like it's your last.

I love this sentiment and I really do try to follow it, it isn't relly that hard I don't have much that anyone would actually consider "best" (china or linens). Hope you are feeling better Floss!

I hope you continue to feel better. I've had thyroid issues in the past. I love these salad servers, they're beautiful. I agree too, we should use the pretty things we have. If they get broken, at least they were lovingly used.
Blessings,
Marcia

I couldn't agree with you more. These beautiful things are made to be used and admired.I use all my...many!...vintage jugs and china.Last weekend we had friends for lunch and I used the mismatched china along with my new pieces. If one gets broken,so be it.Better than keeping them locked away in a cupboard.Mind you...if I put one of my vintage tablecloths out..Mr Boo is under strict instructions to be veeeery careful with the red wine!!
Hope you recover very soon, and enjoy the weekend.

The servers are gorgeous. I understand why you want to take them out of hiding.

Those servers are just so pretty! If I was to wait to place out the nice stuff until I had company then it would not be used that often. Seeing it makes me feel special! Hope you are feeling better soon. A thyroid virus sounds strange, I'll look back to see what your symptoms were. So many bad bugs floating around out there these days.

This is such a lovely thing to do - those are very precious salad servers. I am about to light a candle in my little enamel thrifted candlestick. I know it'll cheer me up! Thanks for spurring me on.
