Lalabibaby made me do it!

Over at Dreaming of the Simple Life, Lalabibaby has set a challenge to go along with her giveaway! She sets the seemingly innocent challenge:
j
" I would like to ask you to do a post about what your first album purchase was .... were you a teen of the 60s 70s 80s 90s ...... and will you admit to recording Top of the Pops off the radio at this time on a Sunday afternoon???? "
So there you go, the picture is your answer. Yes, I liked pop and rock, I recorded it off the radio, I listened to Top of the Pops, but no way was I going to pay money for something I was geting for free! Strange teenager...
I remember this beautiful picture by Ford Madox Brown on the front of one of the first albums I bought - Dvorak's 'From the New World'. I found the picture of emigrants leaving England terribly moving.

And then, as you all know, I got into English folk and I DID buy some Steeleye Span albums. But mostly on tape...

Very strange teenager.

Hi Floss
I say it's better to be a little strange rather than a lot ordinary!

Thanks for your comment about the blanket, I'm still in two minds, maybe leaning towards the white. I did try to delete your first comment, as it didn't make sense after I had posted, but couldn't!!

Hello Floss,
What an interesting post. I confess to not having heard about the last 2 albums you mention. My first album purchase was ABBA - Arrivals album (1976) with a picture of the group next to a helicopter.I was mainly a singles person and bought each individual song that I liked.
And... I too recorded Hit Parade when living in France and then top of the pops chart when I arrived in England. Good memories... Thank you.

You will love Niki's shop, I hope that on your next visit to Somerset you can make a visit there.

Have a lovely evening.
Warm wishes

Great post, Floss. I've been teasing my husband for years now that his knowledge of popular music stops with Beethoven so there you go, you're much more hip than he is! A lot of posts I've been reading lately have been giving me a wonderful trip down memory lane so I think I may have to pop on over to visit Lalabibaby.

By the way, are you sure it isn't Ben who's modelling that rather fetching red ski suit?

Will be interesting to see what others say. My first album was Bridge over Troubled Waters by Simon and Garfunkel. I still have it but sadly no longer a means to play it. That piece of equipment died some months ago.

Such Fun! :o) As You know I like folk too.
I asked for Holst's planet suite and 'The Sound of Music' sountrack for an early (pre-teen, I'm sure) Birthday. The first record I bought was a Simon and Garfunkel one at a jumble sale and the first I bought in a record shop was a David Bowie single.

Hello Floss!

That's more impressive than my first purchase (a Jason Donovan CD, my I was proud of it!!!).

Hope you're all well, sorry I haven't stopped by in ages xxx

Brilliant! I was 10 or 11 when I bought my first LP with some babysitting money I had...Englebert Humperdinck (spelling?) I had a crush on him. I bet you don't feel quite so strange now hey! In my teens my Grandmother gave me south pacific and I have always loved Cock-eyed optimist ever since and have sung it an alarming amount of times over the years! I was/ am definitely strange! :) Suzie xxx

I didn't buy more than a couple of records either! Just wasn't really into it enough I guess and would rather have bought craft supplies even back then. I do remember a Dire Straights album but that's all.

But were you as silly as me? I sat by the radio every week for the entire top 40 pushing play and record at the beginning of every song and bashing stop the minute Tony Blackburns dulcet tones could be heard... I also danced with a hairbrush infront of the TV when Top of the Pops was on and practised kissing in our bathroom mirror....hmmm, too much information?

Well, I was a strange teenager too, I owned a lot of blues records, some Gothic Pipe Organ Music and of course some British Alternative pop. Still, the first record I bought with money from my piggy bank, was the soundtrack to Snow White, I was 5 and I remember it very clearly!

I think the first album was "That'll be the day" a compilation from the film.. that starred David Essex, say no more! Lizzie x
